701 restaurant "...an inventive approach to modern American Cuisine."
Dined on January 25, 2014
Dinner for two: $140 incl. tax and tip with no alcohol
This meal simply was not worth it. The biggest disappointment of the meal was the mediocre quality of the seafood, such a let down.
The seafood was not good and it should have been stellar. I had scallops at Corduroy a month ago that were sweet, tender and divine. The scallops at 701 were cooked properly but absolutely flavorless. The shrimp in the glorified shrimp cocktail were not that tasty either, not fresh tasting. The frozen whole catch peeled and deveined shrimp I buy from Whole Foods is far superior in good-tasting shrimp flavor.
Service was good. Everyone was pleasant and attentive. I really enjoyed the live piano music. As far as decor is concerned, I know 701 is not that old but the place felt dated.
Desserts were so-so. We only ordered them to kill time, we were not expecting great desserts given the state of the food.
701 Restaurant is in a convenient and popular location; there is a lot of competition in the area serving up more interesting food.
Poached Shrimp - Lemon Tapioca, Tomato Jam, Horseradish. The dish description is deceiving because you expect the tapioca to be a prominent ingredient, there were about 5 beads of tapioca, and a hint of something red (I assume the tomato jam). It was a glorified shrimp cocktail with shrimp cut in half length-wise.
Rockfish - Dill Infused Broth, Winter Root Vegetables. Rockfish entree was good. The superb broth made this dish, it would be good with so many things including just dipping your bread. While we both thought the fish was good we each could name other places where we have had rockfish with a more defined taste and therefore more enjoyable flavor.
Caramelized Sea Scallops with Parsnip, Rutabaga, Smoked Bacon Marmalade. The veggies and marmalade were delicious. (see above scallop comments)
Sauteed Wild Mushrooms Truffle Butter. Seemed like regular mushrooms, and the truffle butter did not add anything to the dish. Mushrooms were good but honestly I have had mushrooms sauteed in regular butter that tasted better.
Bok Choy - Lemon, Garlic, Shallot. This was delicious and not over cooked.
Chocolate Ganache Torte - Burnt Orange Caramel, Mango Ice Cream. Very pretty presentation.
Black Forest cake - It was okay.
701 Restaurant boasts inventive food pairings but delivered boring formulations. The meal was dull.
